Armed with a degree in Photography from Humber College, Huy Lam worked and travelled extensively as a coveted agency photographer for more than 10 years and it was here that he nurtured his sense of adventure, his boundless curiosity and his love of spontaneity.
But Lam’s artistry was multi-disciplinary and also included collage from a young age, woodworking and sculpture and his work has been exhibited in private and corporate collections across Canada, Japan and the US.
Born in Vietnam, Lam’s practice is rooted in an ongoing fascination with non-verbal communication, with an emphasis on process-based construction that is informed by his meditation practice. His work is thoughtful, precise and elegant and his profound knowledge of light plays throughout regardless of the medium. Lam draws the viewer’s eye toward his calculative designs, resulting in an illusion of form, dimension and space.
Lam’s sculptures explore the unexpected intersections of our lives, how our disparate trajectories collide across time and space. “Although true linearity does not exist in our lives, or in nature, the human mind nonetheless attempts to impose this unattainable perfection upon our imperfect world.”
Huy is represented by United Contemporary (Toronto) and Gallery Ether (Tokyo, Japan).
